Almost two years ago, I went on a five-day road trip down the Pacific coast with a group of friends I had only just met.
Everything was smooth as butter until ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE on day three.
It was 11 a.m. and we were driving from Big Sur to San Luis Obispo. None of us had eaten anything. Not breakfast, not even a morning coffee (and I NEED my coffee). And Alice, who was in charge of picking restaurants on the trip was adamant that we go to the perfect spot that she had found.
It was TWO HOURS away!!
And I lost it.
I was so hungry that I actually lost it. It wasn’t my proudest moment, but that outburst split the “group” into factions, and it was the start of the two most annoying days I’ve ever had.
I’ve thought about that trip a lot since.
Sometimes it’s the smarter comebacks I could have used during the arguments. But mostly it’s been introspection, trying to understand why we were so dysfunctional in real life when we were such a great team on paper.
In a way, that trip was one of the biggest hiring mistakes I ever made.
